Varkens in Mecca (Californië)

Mecca (tot januari 1904 nog Walters geheten) is een oase gelegen in Riverside County aan de rand van de Colorado woestijn. Als ik de samenstellers van de wervende brochure "MECCA" (1904) mag geloven, is deze plaats het paradijs op aarde.

Ik vind de brochure tijdens het grabbelen in het Texts archief van Archive.org (zoekterm: 'mecca'). Na de Amerikaanse plaatsen Moskee en Allah ben ik benieuwd wat Mecca te bieden heeft. Het is een boeiende brochure gericht op wannabe kolonisten/settlers. Water in overvloed, grond in overvloed, oogst in overvloed - dat is de strekking. Een citaat:

[blz. 16] "LIVE STOCK. [...] With abundance of alfalfa and Indian or Kaffir corn, it is EASY to make the best pork in the world, and make it cheap."

Oei. Díe zag ik niet aankomen. Varkens. In Mecca, nota bene. Ik lees verder. Vanaf blz. 32 volgen er getuigenissen van 'Mecca Settlers'. De laatste alinea van getuigenis № 1 luidt als volgt:

[blz. 32] "Each succeeding crops grows ranker than the last, as the already rich soil responds readily to cultivation. We are well satisfied that we located here. Cheap land and plenty of water should induce homeseekers to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, and faith will come with investigation.
"Yours truly,
"BRAUCKMAN BROS."

Dat was de eerste verwijzing naar de stad Mekka en de bedevaart. Natúurlijk gelooft de Mecca Land Company (MLC) in de toekomst van Mecca. Dit geloof, aldus de MLC,

[blz. 37] "is evident by its expenditure of money in the development of the townsite. [...] The new store building, just completed [...] is called the 'Bazaar' and as its name implies is an emporium where all kinds of merchandise is kept for sale. The south wing of a liberally planned hotel, 'The Caravansary', has also been constructed."

Veel verwijzingen naar de Oriënt dus. Maar er is méér. Vanaf de laatste alinea van blz. 39 wordt het pas ècht interessant:

[blz. 39 + 41] "Riverside County is justly famous in the State of California for the high moral status of its citizens and for many years past this county has been, and doubtless will continue to be, known as a 'Prohobition County'. No license for the sale of intoxicating liquors is issued within this county, and in addition, as a matter of business policy, the owners of the townsite of Mecca insert clauses in all deeds which is intended to forever prevent the sale of intoxicating liquors within its boundaries."

Varkensteelt in Mecca, met als veevoer o.a. Kaffir  graan (Ongelovig)  èn een alcoholverbod. Interessante combi. Het leukste heb ik voor het laatst bewaard: op blz. 3 van de brochure 'opent' de MLC met een beschrijving van het paradijs dat uit de koran afkomstig is: "Gardens Beneath which Rivers Flow" (deze beschrijving is overigens niet in de bijbel te vinden). Lees eens soera 61, aya 12:

[61:12] "He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in Gardens of Eternity: that is indeed the Supreme Achievement"

Mecca, Ca. bestaat nog steeds. "Daar moet ik eens poolshoogte nemen," denk ik. Niet verwonderlijk dat er al eerder moslims zijn geweest met hetzelfde idee. Zo is ene Muhammad Arrabi al langs geweest.
